1.8, AKA the 'Adventure Update' features many new things, including new biomes and a new mob

New Mobs:

Cave spiders. Only found in abandoned mine shafts, these creaturs are very rare. When bitten by one, you will notice your health turning yellow. You have been poisoned! though there is no cure (Jeb says to use milk!), it doesnt last very long, but will bring health very low...

Silverfish. Silverfish are rare creatures, moslty found in strongholds. They are kept inside 'silverfish blocks' and when one attacks you, any silverfish near you will come out of their blocks and attack!

Endermen (endermen, based on youtubes 'slenderman' is a black, long mob that is non hostile unless looked at. After you turn away, it will start to attack, teleporting to avoid you. The endermen die from lava, water and sunlight. Endermen can pick up blocks and move them around. upon death, they will drop an ender pearl.)

New biomes:

Pine forest. this new forest includes pine/spruce trees, and dark grass.

Swamps. These new biomes include dark water, darker grass than the pine forest, and this biomes has dark trees and vines as well.

New items:

Ender pearl. This item is dropped by endermen upon death. It currently serves no use, but it is mythed that it can protect you from endermen (while holding this item, and looking at endermen, they will not be hostile.)

stackable food including: Chicken (dropped by chickens) and raw beef (dropped by cows. Raw beef, when cooked, becomes steak.)

Melon seeds, pumpkin seeds. Currently only found in NPC villages and strogholds, these seeds are rare for now....

Silverfish blocks. Only found in strongholds. They keep silverfish (mob) inside them.

Melons. Melons drop melon slices ranging form 4-7.

Rotten flesh. Replacing feathers, zombies now drop rotten flesh. Rotten flesh is a good way to get your hunger meter from 0-9! It restores hunger just like regular food, but it has an 80% chece of food poisoning, making your hunger meter drain faster. Wolves can be fed the rotten flesh, but they will not be affected in any way other than being healed.

New texture for cooked pork as well....

New areas:

Abandoned mine. if you have building on in your minecraft server, you may run into an abandoned mine! Abandoned mines are made usually of wooden planks, with the occasional mine track. There is a high chance that you will find a chest in there.

NPC villages. Currently having no people, (1.9 pre release is out with the new NPCs!) NPC villages have no use other than to find items, to have a shelter, and to farm. All blocks in the NPC villages can be mined out.

Strongholds. being VERY rare, strongholds are amazingly huge mazes, leading to another huge maze, or to a dead end. Though it is possible to find chests along the way, it is not regularly there. The treasure is at the end of the stronghold, that is if you can survive!
