how long until dropped items dissapear in minecraft?

All items (once dropped) will stay on the ground, disapearing after 5 minutes. Picking them up and dropping them again will restart the five minutes. The timer starts when you are a certian distance away from the items (if you died.) or when you respawn (if your close enough to the items)
