Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners Netflix Ep 4, “Lucky You” Review

Hey runners, this is an adult show: Blood, swearing, nudity, all here. Make sure the little ones are in bed before watching this okay? Don't be a gonk about about it.

If there is a “Training Episode,” this is how it should be done. We get to spend time with everyone on the team. Even then, the story is moving forward and we're getting something out of all of it. Maine very much falls into a mentor role with David, making sure he can pull his weight on the crew with their jobs. Also, gives him some needed encouragement to talk with Lucy about things.

Maine and Dorio are shown to have a closer relationship than it appeared at first. Both are strong fighters with plenty of knowledge of guns (and cybernetic enhancements). But when we spend some time in Afterlife with them, two things are clear. 1) Faraday was right, their target changed venues and routes 2) These two are physically intimate with each other. (and 3) David is good a pestering and having bad timing). Because he wants some time alone, Maine sends David to Aldo to get a package for Pilar. Anything to get the kid out of his hair and get some quality time with Dorio.

The cold open of this episode is especially striking in subsequent viewings. You have better context, know what's happening immediately. Even when I first watched it, seeing everything happening in the slow time, with David's startled face is striking. Just the slow moving droplets before David moves. Also just the stylized lining on his face just before the movement really stands out. Then right into the intro. It's in the latter half of the episode that we come back to this part of it, and everything is revealed about what is going on.

Most of the episode just focuses on the Crew. How they are day to day. Also how David is starting to fit in with them as well. On top of that, just him starting to train and condition himself for simply being an Edgerunner. Lucy is right, in that physical stamina is the main thing you'll need to survive, both in meat space and on the net. They've got him doing a solid workout to get in better shape (teens are usually a little scrawny then beef up), teaching him to fight and drive. Shooting isn't so much his thing right now, with everything more fresh in his mind about his mom. The stamina definitely makes sense. As David gets tougher, builds endurance, he can take better advantage of the Sandevistan and everything it can offer.

Easily, one of my favorite scenes is when the crew is in … “negotiations” with Maelstrom after they grabbed Becca. The Borgs are ready for a fight or scoring a heap of easy eddies, but between David and Lucy, the crew gets the drop and wipes them out. Just a straight-up call back to the mission “The Pick-Up.” Which was a tricky one to do right, especially if you wanted to get with Meredith Stout. Always like the mission for getting to tear through Maelstrom. On top of that, there is a quick few scenes in Lizzie's Bar where we get to see Falco for the first time (yeah, I've watched the whole show and started rewatching it). I'd wondered where he came from and this episode had the answer.

When we do catch up with the beginning of the episode, it's subtle at first. When Pilar starts confronting the man, you see his eyes glitch. We haven't seen that since episode 1, with the Cyberpsycho who had the Sandevistan before David. Pilar goes for aggravated to impressed when he realizes this man has a Mr. Stud installed. Then things go bad, very fast. Things spiral, David freezes, but when he comes around, he responds. For the first time, he kills someone to protect Lucy. This guy proves to be more chromed up than expected, needing to get his head punched off by Maine (then Becca makes sure NOTHING survived). It's the first time we see the team have a major degree of trouble. Maine pulled through having everything he does.

This is also where both Lucy and David actually get some time alone. She explains the one thing every Edge/Netrunner knows. You don't become a legend in Night City by living. It's how you die that gives that to you. On top of that, David makes an important promise to Lucy. To get her to the Moon. He says this as Lucy stands with a Shuttle launching in the background. She grips the back of her head for some reason, then goes over to him and kisses him. The moon is in full view here with the stream of exhaust from the shuttle. In a way, Lucy's ambition to leave Earth for the Moon, and for David, to climb to the heights of being an Edgerunner. Lucy doesn't want David to become a legend, she just wants him to be with her.

Cyberpsychos are nothing new in Cyberpunk 2077 or Cyberpunk Red. These were some of the hardest fights I got into when playing the game. Time for a bit of background on both. In Cyberpunk 2077, Regina Jones has THE LONGEST mission to find and subdue 17 Cyberpsychos, “Psycho Killer” (Qu'est-ce que c'est?). But pursuing it properly to subdue them is worth the effect. Manage to complete this without killing any of them to get up to §25k as well as a Vest and Pants from Trauma team.

Now, in Cyberpunk Red, it's a different story completely. As your runners get augments, they can start to drift from what it is to be human. You get more powerful or better at what the gear does, but will come at a cost. You have 2 stats which are important here: Empathy and Humanity. As these drop with your augments (random amounts based on rolls for each implant)

Let's talk music a little. The funky tune is back with “Whos Ready for Tomorrow” by Rat Boy when David starts doing the errand for Pilar. Just a good beat here in general. “The Other Room” by Earth Trax and “I Will Follow” by Snot Abundance I sort of missed. IF you know where they are, tag us on Twitter. “Friday Night Fire Fight” by Aligns is what we're listening to during David's training up. Just a good beat for something like this. You want a solid beat for any workout. “Acid Breather” by Mastiff is what we're hearing during the short Maelstrom scene. Given the intensity of that scene, not too surprising. “Sustain/Decay” by Piotr Maciejewski/Drivealone is what starts when we see the team clinking bottles with David. It continues as he gets his synth-lungs as well. “Little Stranger” by Dawid Podsiadło and Bogdan Kondracki is what we hear while David and Lucy have their rooftop chat. It's mellow tones are just perfect for the intimate moment that the pair have. “On My Way to Hell” by Połoz is what we're hearing when the Cyberpsycho goes on the attack. A few of these are hust the regulars now. We've heard “Friday Night Fire Fight” in every episode so far. Few others too, like “Sustain/Decay” coming back from episode 2. Honestly, the tunes are good all on their own and are a good listen.

One more note. Very much recommend taking some time to watch the credits every few episodes or so. They are absolutely stunning to watch and hold a few more secrets.

Later Chooms!
