Resident Evil Netflix Series Ep 3, “The Light” Review

Time to return to this world of Resident Evil. Unlikely the other 2 episodes, we actually start with Evelyn Marcus doing an interview to help with the image of Umbrella and Joy®. After only a little banter, the reporter asks Marcus about Raccoon City, and its VERY clear it suffered a terrible fate (zombie outbreaks will do that, canonically, it got nuked). Then we jump forward to the present with Jade running from the ambush set for the underground channel crossing. Jade actually picks up a gun for once. She also saves a child, Liam from the massacre. Also the resident Umbrella Executive, Richard Baxter (Turlough Convery) has a funny line: “Those are rubber bullets right?” and the soldier next to him just shrugs. He's been around, but hasn't done much to warrant much mention. Jade teams up with the parents of the boy she rescues so all of them have a chance to get across the channel through “the Chunnel.” It's pretty much going from a shady crossing to an even shader crossing, and riskier. “The Chunnel” crossing involves going through Lickers. But it does lead to a very nice moment with the Umbrella forces getting torn apart by aforementioned Lickers. Unfortunately, so far the refugees. Jade and others manage to escape the Lickers. Not all the horrors can be avoided though.

Things look very bad for Ellie in the past. After hitting the guy and the blood from her mouth, plus a panicked Jade running up to her... nothing points toward anything good. Albert stops at home then goes to check on his rat that he put Billie's blood into. He arrives to find it hiding elsewhere in the lab and successfully captures it. The infected rat is held down in a vice as Albert examines its blood and compares the activity between the rat and Billie. Jade gets answers from the person she contacted last episode, and nothing good about it. Billie has been changed, and her wound from the dog is healing (strangely judging by Wesker's reaction). She's more sensitive to sound and light, and stronger. We get a very eerie board meeting that needs its own little section to do it any justice. Also, in the past, we get a very clear reveal of Simon's family. Namely that one of his moms is Evelyn Marcus. We see Billie facing the end game of the virus inside her.

More than anything, Joy® is in the center of everything. This episode shows just what the real plan is for it. Joy® would give Umbrella something every corporation dreams of: Control. Unchecked, untraceable control of the masses. There is a concerning thing with Joy® and how Wesker is reacting. It is a question of the lingering viral load. Wesker is clear that Joy® using a derivative of the T-Virus for its effect. The human body is decent at fighting infections, but viruses have always been another matter. How long does it linger in the body? Wesker's concern of 20,000 could just be a while after the release. 1-2 pills a day over the course of a year or so does add up. This is plainly what is going to incite the Outbreak Pandemic. There are still years between where the past and present day are. There is also a good scene as well in the lab. Wesker wants to be sure to have a cure just in case the virus goes wild. He makes the best appeal he can, how much profit Umbrella stands to gain if they're the ones holding the cure.

Don't go toward the Light!”... had to say it.

This is an episode I really enjoyed. We have a good sense of everyone in the show. The relationships can build out now. More things can be revealed to be connected without having a rushed feel. This is only episode 3 of 8. They are pacing things well The tension in the past is building very nicely. Billie's infection is progressing, and her body is changed to a degree. She hasn't gone zombie yet, but the clock is running done if she follows the normal progression with the virus. The episode was a little too on the nose about it though. Jade being in biology and the teacher lecturing about that very topic. It made for some good cinematography, but a bit too heavy handed there.

The surprising tenacity of Baxter just staying alive after the Lickers and getting shot in the chest. We still need to wait and see if he still survives into the next episode after that shot and his force getting overwhelmed. He is very much an executive out in the world. What he controls, he knows he controls. The rest is a bit hard to say. He has no morals and has no problem simply killing off a settlement to get at Jade.

Jade is just having a rough time in the present. She's finding and helping people. The problem is the world itself then comes after them (and having Umbrella after her is a great way to get people killed). She is trying to get home and making a solid push toward it. She's managed to get away from England now. All that's left now is getting to, “The University” with her husband and daughter. It was good to learn about that and where she's living. Plenty of questions left about the world though. Mostly in the past through.

While horror has been part of this series from the start, this is the episode where a lot more of those elements started coming into play. This had a number of jump scares throughout. Plus the sad ending with Liam and Enya as the party made their way through to the other side of “The Chunnel” tunnel. As always, I look forward to reviewing the next episode.
