Smash Bros Ultimate Gets Sephiroth Early!

Nintendo can be very good at surprises when they want to be. With the surprise addition of Sephiroth to the Super Smash Bros Ultimate roster, much joy was had (and a few groans for the addition of a FF 7 character over any other in the franchise). It was just revealed that Sephiroth has been added to  the game already and can now be unlocked. But, it's not as simple with any other DLC character before as just booting up the game. To unlock Sephiroth, you must earn him in the tradition Smash Bros fashion, in single combat.

Taking on the "Sephiroth Challenge" is simple. The access it, you need to either have gone for Fighter Pass 3 or purchased Sephiroth from the Nintendo eShop. With that cleared, go the main menu of the game. Press "+" to access the "Sephiroth Challenge." Once  it, simply select your difficulty to continue from here. Fighting Sephiroth is not going to be easy at Normal or above (unless you've been playing Smash regularly for a while now). No items are available and your Ultimate Smash is disabled as well. You will need to learn his attacks, how to dodge and block them, while dealing with his long reach. His most unique attack is from a simple flick of his wrist that will create an orb of rotating energy, up to a max of 5 or 6. After a short while, these Orbs will slam into the fighter they were targetted at, for heavy damage. Be sure to watch out for Flare, this is a mid-range charge B move that he has. Fully charged, this orb can One-Hit KO for light-weight characters.

When you defeat Sephiroth, you will unlock him, and his stage, "Northern Crater." With a large central platform and 2 small raised platforms on the sides, this is not a very complex stage. The background, on the otherhand, does a lot. The stage starts with the fighters diving into the Northern Crater, the final area of Final Fantasy 7. A moderate descent later, and they will reach the bottom, the start of where Cloud and the others fought Jenova and Sephiroth. From there, they will descend into the depths of the crater, to the final battle location from the game itself. You will see the captured Holy Spell in the background, encased in red chitin. After that, the stage will ascend out of the Crater and you can see Meteor and Holy make contact on the surface of the planet.

The tracks of "One-Winged Angel" have been in Smash for a while, taking on the boss associated with them is something else. With the added stake of unlocking him, the music fits very well to the atmosphere. The track remains amazing and I love that there is the original version and one from "Advent Children." The orchestration is fairly similar, but they are very distinct versions of an amazing song.
