No, it's not necessary, however I would highly recomend you play it anyway.  There really is not that much story information that takes place during the game, but it is an excellent game that will leave you familiarized with the Portal series.

So while you would definitely be better of playing Portal 1 before Portal 2, it is not necessary.

I would recommend playing the first as you won't understand many of the jokes or characters. You can beat the first in under two hours so it doesn't take long.

It's like watching Back to the Future II without having watched Back to the Future.

you're not really missing out on the story, but you are missing out on an awesome gaming experience if you don't play it. there's a reason the original portal won over 30 goty awards.

No, I wouldn't say so. Portal 2 does a good job of introducing new playes into the story line and the puzzles are all introduced again. But I would recomend playing through Portal 1 if you really like Portal 2. Both the games are great and are worth playing through imo.

You should fit right into Portal 2 without having to play Portal 1 although they may be certain references that you don't get from Portal 1.

Not necessary but good to have since you will know the story before you embark on Portal 2.

No. Portal 1 is not necessary to play Portal 2. Although i highly recommend playing Portal 1 first so you will know what the whole story is of Portal.

Not at all! There's no pre-requirement in terms of installing portal 2. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended (as you can see by everyone else answering!)

I found the game very fulfilling personally!

Agree with most others, no but the story would mean a little more with Portal 1 for context.

It is definitely not necessary, but it is probably better to be familiar with the story in Portal 1 to fully enjoy the story in Portal 2.

no, it isn't necessary cuz portal 2 reviews everything you need to know to play the game and recaps some of the plot

No but portal 1 kind of gives you the basics and starts out the cake is a lie and is really fun i recommend  you go on steam and download the free demo of portal 1 first slice then you can learn the basics first at least although you won't have learned about orange portals and the killing robots

It's not necessary but the storyline is a direct continuation of the first game. The first game only takes 2-3 hours to beat anyway, so you might as well.

Honestly unless it is a direct continuity in story such as a Mass Effect no game's first attempt is never needed though with Portal it is just fun to play the first to get the idea of Cake and all the sarcasm of Glados in the 2nd game.

No, but I still recommend playing the first one.

This is a matter of opinion; there is no strict rule saying you must play Portal before Portal 2, however it would make little sense to not do so. Portal 2 continues the story of Portal and has a lot of references back to it; the entire dialouge between the protagonist and GLaDOS revolves around their previous encounters in Portal and these are not described in detail at any point in Portal 2.

Well, no, but if you want to truly understand the backstory to Portal, I insist you play the first one.

It's not necessary, but you'll miss out of some of the jokes and sarcasm of GLaDOS
