how do you make a workbench in minecraft?

Break a block of wood off of a tree, and then put it in the mini crafting window on your inventory screen (The top four square box). This will produce 4 Wood Planks. Now put 1 of those in each of those 4 squares to make a crafting table. The crafting table can be put down anywhere, and provides a 3x3 crafting space, which is what most items require.
