You find diamond in the lowest part of caves, generally near lava.

The best place to find diamonds is in cave systems located below the elevation of 18 blocks.

It takes a while to mine down this far and to find a cave system, but that' where the highest concentration of them are.

Also, every diamond ore I've found has been located by lava, so make sure to look around and take your time when you encounter some!

12 blocks above bedrock, to about 20 above bedrock, is the best place to find diamond. You can find your exact depth by pressing F3, which gives you X,Y,Z coordinates. Your Y coordinate is your height, 0 being bedrock. The coordinates give distance in meters, so a height of 1 is one meter from bedrock, which is also 1 block from bedrock, since blocks have a lenght and height of 1 meter.
