Yeah man, sorry. Every server costs money unless you're just playing it in the same house or something, then you can just make a LAN server.

do you mean LAN as in multiplayer....
you can host from home online if you setup your router correctly, where if you count it, the cost would be the electricity from keeping it runnung.

and by LAN meaning local area network as in a home network
So what your saying is that my credit card wont be charged, i just have to pay extra on my electricity bill?
yes that is correct, server software is available at no charge from minecraft.net
use portforward.com with help on setting up router
also double check with Ur ISP if you are allowed to host servers or they may block the ports to stop u since it may be avaunt Ur terms and conditions
also the computer the server is on must stay on for the server to be up
also you more than likely have a dynamic ip so the server address for others to use will change every few days, look into dyndns for a solution here
also Ur net is most likely adsl which means slow upload speed which will be one of the major causes of lag when a high number of players are on. you could look I to sdsl if hosting servers is something you will do alot of, but where I am it's easily 5 times the price of standard broadband (adsl)
if there's anything elee I can help with add me on steam as beeny1 just let me know which name Ur using so I know who to accept

Every kind of server cost money, even GAME SHAMPOO servers. Minecraft is no exception.

No actually the server software is free to download from Minecraft.net. But you will need to pay extra for bandwidth.

It depends on what kind of server you are going to use.

Local Server (running on your own pc) : Cost nothing , since it is your own pc.

Dedicated Server : Cost $10~50 , because you buy a dedicated minecraft game server, which is hosted on very fast servers of a company.

Hope i helped you with your question.

Only the cost of electricity and the bandwidth (which you're paying for anyways!).

You can host your own server and have one for free, or buy one. You could make your own dedicated server, if you really wanted to. Technically servers are free.

It's free to make one :D but you do need to know how to make one and about port forwarding etc. My mate was able to set one up that me, him and a few mates play on :D There are a lot of youtube videos about it if you wanna have ago yourself :) but yeah, free XD except for internet usage costs, but that's as per usual  excpet for
