What does white listed mean in minecraft

In Minecraft I wanted to go onto a server but on the loading screen it said

`This Server is White-Listed` I have no idea what it means and want to know how to get on the server

This means that your username isn't on the 'white-list'.

The 'white-list' is list that contains the usernames of players who are allowed to join a server. If your name isn't on this list, then the server won't let you get on.

If you'd like to get on the list you most likely need to contact a moderator or op to have them add you to it.
