The seed for world generator allows the user to provide the string of letters and numbers that set the basis for the world generator.

When left blank, the random generation variable is based off of the the CPU clock, which means you could go all day creating new worlds and none of them would be the same.

But when filled with a word, like "Glacier", it will create a world identical to any other world created with the seed "Glacier."

You can find certain seeds for other people's games in which you can input the numbers and get the same world they created.

This is good for if someone has a nice world that you want to try out, you can do it on your own without having to play on their server.

A seed is basically a number that is used in an algorithim used to generate random numbers. These numbers are then used to generate the terrain and such.
