Three simple things:

First you must place it on mud.

Second you must place it underground between the only-dirt layer and stone layer. (Notice backgrounds to differ layers, the second layer with %90 dirt and %10 stone pieces.)

Third, do not place any light source around, it grow and spread faster in darkness.
