Could be a number of reasons ranging from low bandwidth to too many people on the server at once, or maybe its not a server that is local to your region.

There are numerous explanations for this.

Maybe the server computer is too weak also , or something is with your connection, or close runnning programs , it could help also.

Most likely the host of the server is not dedicated. Or maybe its your connection to the host.

I have found that if the creator of the server isn't on the server at the time, it lags much much more.

Running a computer program is sort of like running water down a pipe. The amount of water that you can run through the pipe is limited by the smallest piece. So the server is limited by some part of its computer and that causes lag. The cause could be anything from RAM, CPU power, Internet Connection, Harddisk, ect. The cause of LAG can also be on your side for all of the same reasons. If the cause is on ther server's side, there is nothing you can do about it unless you directly change the server.
