Obsidian is only used to make portals to the nether at this moment. However notch said something about obsidian will become special blocks who can fly in the air without blocks under that. When this will be done normal blocks will fall down like sand.

It doesn't do too much. You can use it to make a portal to the nether in single player. You can also use it to make explosion resistant buildings and such. That's about it.
