Eventually you hit bedrock, which is an undescrutable block type. So there is a limit to how far you can dig straight down.

As already said before, you'll hit bedrock after a while, which can't be destroyed. However, digging straight down is highly unadvisable, since you can never know what is located below the block you are standing on. You might fall into a cave, resulting in a lot of damage to you, or even worse, there might be lava under there, which will almost certainly kill you.
