if you don't die frequently, or have to get healed frequently, you are good

Compare it to others of a similar class, who you know are in a higher-standing guild or quality pvpers.

Gearscore is always a somewhat good indicator of your general level, however it does sort of come down to your skill as a player. IE I had a Paladin that could DPS and Heal Ulduar when it first came out, and my gear wasn't that great but I could play well and good enchants/gems.
