Mob is a broad term that generalizes the monsters in the game. However, you won't see mob used in reference to NPC guards of the opposing faction. There is a distinction here. Generally, mob implies that the monster isn't particularly notable, also.

In some of the first forms of online MMO games, there were different types of "things" in the game.  Rooms,  Objects, and Mobiles.  Mob is a shortened version of Mobile from the R.O.M coded MuD games.  And that is where its original meaning came from.
