Hold W whilst facing the direction you would like to go. The sailing can be a bit glitchy but you get used to it after a while.

You make a boat using 5 planks, 3 on the bottom and 1 on each middle side, then you press your second mouse button to place the boat in the water, and the same button to get in it, sometimes getting out of the boat is tricky, so you might need to brake it.

Right click with the boat selected in to place the boat. You can place it out of water, but it won't do much. Once you place the boat, right click to get inside the boat. Then you can use the movement keys to move around.
