You go to the village shop and buy 6 Barley.  Then go to the docks, click on ship, click on what's in the hold (a screen pops up empty) load your Barley and click on Go Trade.  A map pops up asking where you want to go.  Click on Tredony for Gems.

If you need wood. do the above but you need Mushrooms and go to Crafthold.
