Cats(obtained by taming ocelots found in jungles) will keep creepers at bay, as creepers are afraid of cats. I also like cats because they make a nice friend you can take anywhere, and they do not take fall damage, nor attack mobs when you don't want them too. However, ocelots only spawn on easy or higher, so watch out if you go look for one.
