If you are looking for an inexpensive solution, this gamepad has worked well for me. I own two of them and they work like a charm and are pre-configured and supported in pretty much every game.
I have recently upgraded to a wireless 360 controller for my PC so I no longer use my Logitech Dual Actions but if you are on a budget, I'd go with this.
If money isn't a concern either buy a 360 pad OR a Razer. I own a Razer keyboard (Black Widow ultimate) and mouse (Mamba Elite) and they make good, quality stuff. But it is pricey.

Personally I'd recommend a wired 360 controller, as they're supported by pretty much any game with gamepad support. If you have another kind of console controller you could look into getting an adapter for one of them. Otherwise you could try one from Logitech, Razer or Saitek.

Xbox 360 controller is pretty good. It's ergonomic and almost every game has official support for it.

The Xbox 360 Wireless controller is the best. I have one myself with a special receiver for the PC.

You really can't go wrong with Logitech. The wired 360 controller works very well, too, but the D-pad is trash.

Razer gaming pads are nice, but too expensive. I would recommend Logitech, they are pretty good and cheaper than Razer.

It depends on your budget. If you can, get a 360 pad because it works by default with a PC and the quality is very high.
Alternatively, if you have an old PS2 controller, you can buy a cheap adapter to use it on your PC.
Otherwise, I have had good luck with cheap ~$15 Logitech gamepads.

I got a Logitech for $30 at Best Buy. Very responsive and works with all of my games. It even comes with a (somewhat complicated) program to edit controls in any game.

me personally i use a logitech but at the same time there is an snes controller adapter you can find for about 8 dollars if you knwo where to look. and that controller works really really well with games like street fighter 4, and the majority of mame games.
