Nintendo Details New Business Plan, Mario Kart 8 Release Date

In the wake of a downright depressing quarterly report, Nintendo has regrouped to host a corporate strategy event with CEO Satoru Iwata.

Iwata took the stage to announce new mobile initiatives for Nintendo that, as promised, don't include mobile games or demos, as well as a slew of other Wii U-focused features. This meeting had echoes of a similar event held in "honor" of the 3DS and its poor sales a few years ago.

First and foremost, Mario Kart 8 will release exclusively for the Wii U this May. Nintendo clearly sees this as big news, and why shouldn't they? Mario Kart Wii sold over 30 million copies. But the thing you need to remember here is that those 30 million Wii consoles were already in the hands of gamers, while the Wii U has sold less than a tenth that.

Additionally, Nintendo will make GamePad use more integral to their Wii U games from now on. This goes in the opposite direction of many analysts' suggestions, which had Nintendo making the GamePad optional to foster a price cut.

A Nintendo DS Virtual Console will also begin to roll out on the Wii U soon, although we can't really reccomend buying any of those games until you know whether or not they'll transfer over to the next Nintendo system - the company has been notoriously bad at making its accounts transfer from one system to the next.

A Nintendo app will also come to smartphones, which will allow you to keep track of upcoming Nitnendo releases.
