The Big Fat List Of Must-Have PS4 Launch Titles

The PS4 is coming tomorrow (or tonight for those intrepid fans who intend to wait in line), and like with any console launch, things are coming in hot and can get a little confusing. First-party titles that should have been a sure thing might not be all they're cracked up to be, while third-party games or downloadable titles you may have overlooked will end up getting the star treatment in the weeks to come.

To better prepare you for the rigors of a new console launch, we've put together a list of must-have PS4 titles based on three categories: fun factor, visual showcase, and free-to-play fun. Head below to ensure that you don't miss out on anything come launch day.

Fun Factor

The following games will keep you playing long into the night with their high replayability and rock-solid gameplay.

Battlefield 4

Aside from the PC, there's no better place to play Battlefield 4 than on the PS4. Sony's console runs the game with the smoothest framerate, the highest resolution, and the best graphics of any of the consoles. But aside from being a great tech showpiece and a rerassuring glimpse of what we can expect from the PS4 in the future, Battlefield 4 is just downright fun. The game's massive multiplayer suite is back, and better than ever thanks to a slew of returning modes, and new gametypes like the chaotic Obliteration. If multiplayer shooting and team-based play are your cup of tea, Battlefield will keep you playing long into the night... provided everything goes smoothly with the servers on launch day.

Resogun

This downloadable title will be free for all PlayStation Plus members come launch day, so it could technically fit in with the free-to-play section at the end, too. Normally $15, this colorful vector-based shooter is a real treat for the eyes and the hands, as it looks as good as it plays. Blasting enemy ships into oblivion is as fun here as it's been in classics like Super Stardust HD and Geometry Wars, but it's the neon-soaked visuals and the crumbilng backdrops, combined with the unique hook of capturing civilians and rescuing them before they die, that makes Resogun so much fun. If you've got even an ounce of arcade gamer in your blood, Resogun will surely keep coming back to beat your old scores and tackle those massive bosses "one last time."

Visual Showcase

So, you've got a new console and you want to show it off to everybody. I get it. The following PS4 games will make all your current-gen friends pine for the PS4 and its incredible power.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The best-looking shooter at launch, Shadow Fall dazzles with stunning cityscapes, massive explosions, and perhaps most surprising for a Killzone game, bright, beautiful vistas in which to shoot some Helghast dead. This series has always been a visual tour-de-force, and Shadow Fall is no exception. Seek it out if you're looking to impress upon yourself or your friends just what a next-gen shooter can do - this is, after all, the first dedicated next generation FPS, and it shows.

NBA 2K14

2K's annual basketball franchise might not be the first that comes to mind when you think beautiful-looking games - after all, the minimal iteration of sports titles that usually comes with a next-gen launch typically has these kinds of games looking marginally better than their last-gen predecessors at best. But as with the gameplay and the tuning, 2K14 refused to settle for less-than-stellar graphics, and pumps out hands down the most realistic player models we've ever seen in a sports game. You've got to see this thing in action - it's absolutely stunning. Oh, and for basketball fans, there's yet another rock solid game of hoops hiding behind all the pretty visuals.

Free-to-Play Fun

The PlayStation 4 is making a serious commitment to free-to-play, and that's being well represented at launch. Even if your new console has left your bank account dry, you can get in on the fun with the following launch window games.

Blacklight Retribution

Fans of the quick-paced action of Call of Duty will feel right at home with Blacklight, a free-to-play title that generally does a great job of keeping the paid stuff cosmetic instead of gameplay-based. This fast and fun multiplayer shooter features solid map design, tons of weapons, and - oh yeah - sweet mech suits. Like free-to-play champ DotA 2, you can pay to customize your avatar if you want to invest deeper in the experience, but there's still a complex and rewarding multiplayer game at its heart that you never have to drop a penny on.

Warframe

If you're more into cooperative play, Warframe's got you covered. Like Blacklight, Warframe has been out on the PC for a while now. Still, if you haven't played it there, or if you're looking for something to bide the time until your wallet recovers from the massive next-gen rush this November, you could do a lot worse than Digital Extremes' first attempt at free-to-play. Cooperate with up to three other players to complete a collection of action-packed missions online in this third-person shooter that just keeps getting deeper with each update.
