dead island how do you combine weapons to make a new weapon?

Hi,

You need to get 'mods' before you can make for example a bat with nails in, or a machete with electric. You'll get these by completing quests off people. Then put them together on a workbench.

I'm not sure if you can combine say two of the gun to make a better one though. Only upgrade them on a workbench.
