No, if you cut out a block of wood from a tree (Regular, Birch, or Spruce) the rest of the tree will float there. Depending on how high you cut, or where, rather, some leaves may fall off, making saplings fall to the ground. Saplings can be placed on grass or dirt to grow new trees.
