how do you build a workbench for terraria?

you start with an axe, use it on the bottom block of a tree to collect wood, once you have 10 wood press escape and scroll through the list in the bottom left till you find it

to use it you only need to be standing near it once its been placed in the world, but as for everything it will only show up what you can make with the stuff you are carrying
