what happens if you die in minecraft?

No, seriously. When you die in Minecraft, as of right now you will respawn back at the starting point where you entered the world.
 

The plans are for beds to be new respawn points, starting soon (Possibly next week).

If you die in Minecraft, your inventory will spill onto the ground and you will be given the option to respawn. Doing so will place you at the original starting location of your map.

You have to hurry to retrieve all the items from your inventory, though, otherwise they will disappear!

I would recommend leaving a trail of torches from the spawn point to your house, it will make it much easier to find your way back in the unlucky case of you dieing.

Death scatters your inventory within about a five meter radius of the point of your demise. Your items will be there for five minutes after you die, so you have time to run back and pick them up before they are gone forever.
