The plot is pretty simliar and linear throughout all of the variations.  I would recommend getting black or white.  It isn't necessary for you to play the older games to play the new ones.  I'm about to fight the elite 8 in white, and I've really enjoyed this game the most of all of them that i've played: red, blue, fire red, pearl, and platinum.

If you are a younger game, you should probably start with black and white. The stories of all the games don't coincide, so you won't be missing anything. If you are an older gamer, I would advise buying a copy of red or blue. They are the originals, and also my personal favorite.

One of the biggest complaints I have always heard about pokemon is that it doesn't really change much between games. Therefore, it would be best to buy pokemon black or white ( the most recent ones), and then go back to older ones if you want to.

In truth, all Pokemon games are made to be easy for anyone. A long time veteran or a first time player can enjoy the game the same, if in different ways. Since Pokemon are all basically the same, you should probably buy the newest one (Black or White).

You can really start with any game since they are made for a new time player to jump right in.

For a first time player Black & White is the best.

I would agree with Black and White. It is good for the fundamentals of the game.

Any of the pokemon games are good for beginners. None of them requires any previous experience and they all start slow teaching the player step-by-step.

I'd say any of them are easily playable, the newer ones more-so due to tighter design.

For DS:
Diamond or Pearl, Soul Silver or Heart Gold, Black or White. I wouldn't play platinum without diamond/pearl to be honest.

Any of them is fine though - I've found the newest games Black/White to have a really interesting story/theme to it + best graphics so maybe you'd like to play that straight off the bat.

Soul Silver/Heart Gold are remakes of the old Silver/Gold games and have better looking pokemon (personal opinion, but im sure there'd be heaps of people who agree with me. The newer pokemon start to look less aesthetically pleasing..)

But to sum it all up, any is fine!
