You can, but I would recomend plowing through Portal 1 first anyway.

It doesn't take very long to run through, and you'll come out of it getting more of the jokes and references as well as having an added familiarity with how Portal puzzle solving works.

I would recommend playing the first Portal for sure before you play the sequel. You might understand the story a bit, but you won't really understand the gameplay or GLaDOS herself unless you play the original Portal. It's an amazing game too!

You don't NEED to play it Portal 1 first honestly.

But I'd highly recommend it, not only because you will probably understand the inside jokes and game mechanics better, but also because Portal 1 is an awesome game, and its also quite short, so you could probably finish it in a day or two.

Play the first game if you're interested in knowing the story. I believe RPG fans won't be asking this question. If you're more interested in solving puzzles, jump into any game you like. Note : if you get portal 2, you get the first one along with it on steam. So dont rust, play freely.

It's short but it's verry well worth it, it didnt get lots of awards for nothing. I would personaly say the first one is a requirement, since its nice to play the 2nd one while knowing why all this is going on.

you could, but I really think you should play the original game first. seriously, it earned over 30 Game of the Year Awards in 2007.

I highly suggest you play Portal first before playing Portal 2. It helps you grasp the concepts of Portal and understand Gladious and the plot. Trust me, it's worth it.

Nothing wrong with that.

Although playing the first one is recommended so you will know the full story.

I would not suggest it; portal 1 has a rich story that you will miss out on. Plus, the stark contrast in locales gives an added richness to portal 2 that you wouldnt have otherwise.

to actually understand teh story it is more then likely better to play through portal 1 before venturing into portal 2. and if your really brave go into mods with portal like portal prelude and portal pro ;)

It won't make much of a difference since Prtal 2 is going more mainstream than Portal 1 so Valve is expecting firstcomers. You should still run through it, though.
