To get a good framerate on Portal 2 set the game to a lower resolution, like 800x600 or below. Also set all effects to off, put Antialiasing to off or change it to Bilinear.

Posting the configuration or atleast the mention of the video card would have been helpful.

Try disabling AA and lower the resolution to two sets down compared to the native resolution. Bringing it down to Trillinear would speed up the game. lower to bilinear won't make any difference. AA is the main factor here. Good luck!

Turn the resolution to 640x800 and make all settings the lowest choice and for all enable/disable options, choose disable.

We can't really help you without your specs, but here are the requirements for Portal 2

    • OS: Windows 7 / Vista / XP
    • Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
    • Memory: 1GB XP / 2GB Vista
    • Hard Disk Space: At least 7.6 GB of Space
    • Video: Video card must be 128 MB or more and should be a DirectX 9-compatible with support for Pixel Shader 2.0b (ATI Radeon X800 or higher / NVIDIA GeForce 7600 or higher / Intel HD Graphics 2000 or higher).
    • Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible

Actually resolution is not that critical, but it still depends on what you mean by slow PC (older video card or cpu? Or both) Generally, try turning off anti-aliasing, lowering texture details, definitely turn off v-sync, disable any HDR and bloom. Depending on your system one setting may work better than another. The best thing I recommend to do is to try out different combinations and see what works beset for you.

Resolution is the most important option for a slow PC so lower that down.

And also turn off AA can help.

Safe answer is to go with the lowest possible settings for the fastest frame rate.

Turn down the resolution and effects. You need at least 1GB of ram.

For a ultra big boost:

Go to options, manually lower the advanced video optiions and the resolution, disable Antialiasing and Vsync, go to your graphics card control panel and put it in Performance mode (it's usually in the icon tray).

See if it is still slow.

It is?

Go to portal 2, options, enable console.

In the console there are some commands that disable some effects, making it more faster. Type in:

r_shadows 0

mat_drawwater 0

mat_picmip 4

(from another answer I made)

I would turn everything off in the video settings section and lastly turn the resolution down until you get decent frame rates.
