Ask YOUR question:

Which is scarier, the Penumbra games or Amnesia?

+13 votes
I get scared of games like Amnesia really easily, but my friend keeps bugging me to play so I want to know which of these games, either one of the games in the Penumbra series, or Amnesia, is scarier. Thanks for the help!

My personal experience with both game would suggest that Amnesia is a bit more scarier and heart pounding compared to Penumbra. I had played and completed Penumumbra - overture and black plague, both are extremely good but i find Amnesia a bit horrifying. Don't forget to get the Justine DLC for Amnesia. Completely worth it.

Currently Amnesia is considered by most players the scariest game to play.

Definitely Amnesia. Penumbra is good, but after playing Amnesia I can't help but feel like it was more of a tech demo for Amnesia then a game.

I actually heard that Frictional Games has been developing a new game, maybe some of that new tech will help go into developing this new game?

Interestingly both are made by the same developer.

From personal experience, Amnesia is scarier due to the whole atmosphere of the game. Play it at night with the lights out and see what I mean.

They both are on the same level, but id say Amnesia's a bit higher.

Having played both, I think Amnesia is definitely THE scarier game, it's also well made.

Penumbra relied on a lot of dark areas/no light situations, where I feel like Amnesia played more to the psychological concept of fear.

Personally, both are great games, but I'd give the edge to Amnesia for sure.

Definately amnesia. Since in amnesia, you have no way of fighting back. This gives the game a suspense that results from you constantly feeling vulnerable.

Amnesia is much, much scarier. Not only are the monsters creepier, but you can't outrun them or kill them, unlike in Penumbra. It also has a very Lovecraftian feel to it, being stuck in a huge castle alone with a bunch of monsters.
