I'm pretty sure you would be a bit lost, and I'm betting the atmosphere of P2 builds on P1.

Portal 2 is a sequel to Portal 2, however Portal wasn't very story heavy.

I would say it's OK to play Portal 2 without having playing Portal 1, but you should just for the fun of it. It really only takes a few hours to complete anyway.

Portal 2 is a stand-alone game, not an expansion. Meaning the developer has the new user in mind just as they do the veterans of the original.

The game will have a tutorial at the beginning of a new game, so you will be good to go. You may want to play the original just for the story/experience!

You may be a bit lost if you haven't played Portal 1, but like some said, Valve designed it for the new player and the old player alike. So even if you didn't play Portal 1, I'm sure they'll explain the story so far during the initial moments of Portal 2. And if they don't, well, you will understand it anyway, it's not that hard (although I think you should play it anyway)

Since the story line is a continuation of the first portal I would recommend playing portal 1 first. While the second game may be fun, it's storyline would probably not make much sense to you without any previous knowledge.

Yes, its totally ok, Portal 1 would just give you a better view of what the game is like.

As many have no doubt said, play the first one. It's a terrific game and you won't regret it.

It's okay, but you'll probably miss out on a lot of the jokes and various humor. I haven't actually played the game but based on what I've heard that's the case.

It's ok. Portal 1 wasn't story oriented. It's short and more towards a tech demo.

Portal 2 is a fine stand alone game and does not require you to play Portal 1 first. The only benefit is to have some understanding of the game story but its not required for the actual game play.

The story in Portal isn't exactly complicated.  I'd definitely suggest playing the first game regardless because its an insanely fun game, however I'm rather sure you could quite easily make it through the entire second game without a problem if you've never played the first.

Well in fact it is ok to play it without playing portal 1 first  , since you get some intro levels in portal 2 first.

But to understand the story how and why portal 2 begun , i would suggest to play portal 1 first so you get the point of everything. (GLaDOS and the test chambers , and why you were chosen for these tests.)

It is perfectly OK. Portal 2 has tutorials at the beginning (From what I've heard) so anyone can play it wihtout any prior knoweldge.

However if you want to optimise your gaming experience, you should play Portal 1 first! smiley

There is no need to play the first one, although I would suggest that you do. Both are great games, and you get Portal 1if you preordered Portal 2 on steam.

At first the game revolves around the puzzles more than the story. You'd be taken by surprise about what happens in the later stages of the puzzle. I'd recommend you to play portal 1 before playing portal 2, to know more about GLaDOS and the famous "cake is a lie" meme. Also, Coultan's song would make much less sense if you hadn't played the first part.

No. Playing Portal 1 first will give you a clear shot of what the meaning is of Portal and how you need to play it. Playing Portal 2 straight on will give you the idea "huh?"

Sure it is. You problably won't get the best experience story line wise if you haven't played the first one before portal 2. Portal 2 does a good job of bringing you up to speed on the story line if you didn't play portal 1.

It is ok, but you will lose some details in the history and a lot of humour :)

There isn't really any punishment for not playing Portal 1 first. You might not understand it a bit but it's highly recommended.

if your getting it off steam spend the extra 5 bucks to get the double package you learn the basics plus the fun storyline that should help you understand
