Open your options menu, go to keyboard and mouse options, find and enable "Allow Developer Console".

You have to have developer commands enabled in the Steam options. Once you have that enabled you can access the console by hitting the '`' key.

Sometimes, on alternate keyboard layouts, pressing a keyboard simply doesn't work. Your safest bet is using a launch option in Steam.

In your Steam library, right click on Portal 2, select Properties, and click on Set launch options. You should type -console in there, and next time you start up the game, it will open up the console automatically.

In any source game I know you have to go to Options>Keyboard>Advanced and put a tick next to "Allow Developer Console" to enable the console. Then press "~" while in the game :) Hope this helped

Go to the options menu and click on keyboard and mouse options. Find and enable "Allow Developer Console". Once enabled save settings and go back to the game. To bring up console, press the tilde key, which is above the "tab" key

Nobody seems to be addressing the fact that in some cases, you actually have to assign the key first. After you've enabled the developers console, go to the keyboard setting and look for the key that is assigned to it so you can it if you like. In mine, the default key was ctually /.
