Pretty much the majority of the "Free to Play" games online are MMO's.  Though this doesn't always mean you have to play with others. One of my personal favorites that i could recommend is:

The Hunter:
http://www.thehunter.com/pub/
A very atmospheric and somewhat realistic hunting sim along the lines of Deer Hunter 2005.  If you enjoy Hunting sims i recommend it.  Though when i say it's realistic i mean, there is always a chance you may not find a dang thing to shoot at for a long time.  But for me there's a  very rewarding sense of acomplishment when you bag a kill you've been tracking a while.

It just so happens that I just came across a review of some of the better ones.

If you ask me, minecraft is kind of a waste of time, but a lot of people seem to enjoy it so you could give that a shot.

Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield play 4 free are the most popular games in the genre right now. Other recommendations,

Spiral Knights, Wakfu beta etc.

League of Legends is a great F2P PvP game probably my favorite. There aren't a lot of ffree to play games out there. We have become lacking in that region. My experience that is pretty much the only worth it one especially if you have a pc.

It kind of depends on what you like to play.

It's really a challenge to learn how to play but I personally really love Dwarf Fortress. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ You can get a graphical pack so it's not so scary to start playing it.

It's a lot like minecraft, you can do anything! You build a fortress and manage dwarves. You can build farms, giant dining rooms, balistas, you can fight goblins, and make an entire industry to trade to other civilizations.

Here's the "lazy newb pack" for if you want to get started. It has tutorials and the graphical improvements that make the game playable (in my opinion)

I also really like bloodline champions. It is kind of in the same genre as League of Legends (DoTA) but it feels more like world of warcraft arena.

Here is a link to a great article about free games for the PC, many of them have been mentioned here already by other members. There’s enough games listed here for you to try one each day if you want, my two favorites are - Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and America's Army.

Nexuiz
Cube 2
These are multiplayer games. Just search for "Free FPS" and the first link is a wikipedia page with a list of free FPS games :)

Minecraft Classic is fun if you like building stuff. Make sure you find a good multiplayer server with good antigrief tools and build commands.
