Why am I allowed to log into the website, but not the downloaded game?

When I log into the website, Minecraft.net , I am allowed to be accessed to my accout. But, when I downloaded the file for the full version, It won't let me log in, but I can play offline. Any ideas why? If it's any different (which I don't think it is) I'm using Linux Mint.
