They reflect Hawke's attitude when answering the question or the friendship/love interestest/rivalry points associated or the nature of the answer (if it's an exclusive answer you unlocked from a previous conversation choice).

The instruction booklet gives a detailed explanation for each symbol on page 3.

Blue Halo/Wings - friendly, helpful answer.

Green Leaf - agreeable, tactful answer.

Purple Mask - humorous, witty answer.

Gem - Charming answer.

Red Fist - agressive action/answer.

Hammer/Gavel - direct or rude answer.

Two Swords - Initiate a fight or strike/kill someone in response.

Floating Head - A companion will answer instead of Hawke.

Heart - Flirt or pursue romantic interest.

Broken Heart - Opposite of above.

Check Mark - Agree or Consent.

Red X - Disagree or Refuse.

Three Swirling Arrows - Choosing one of multiple exclusive options.

Star With Arrows - Making a special choice that is only available because of previous choices.

Coins Falling - Extort Money or Give Money.

Crossed Fingers - Will attempt to Lie.

Question mark - Indicates a question that can lead to other conversation options in the future, or just increase your knowledge of the lore/backstory.
