You are able to receive the rivalry effect in your companion's skill tree

You benifit with a rivalry skill for that particular character e.g. Varric has faster firing rate of his crossbow when in rivals with him, but in friendship, attack bonus to party.

There is a passive rivaly skill that becomes active that benefit Hawke and the companion who's rivalry is maxed.

You get the passive Rivalry skill, also, there are no more friendship/rivalry points given to that character based on your choices.

You get the rivalry effect. Don't worry about any sub-effects though, as it doesn't affect the storyline, ending, etc.
