To find a normal chest just find caverns above ground. These contain weak weapons.

As for the Golden chests they are found below 0 feet. These contain a higher rarity of items and more items.

Also if your looking for a specific chest just use a terraria mapper which you can find on the terraria wiki. Also Golden chests are always found in dungeons.

The dark lance is the only weapon that can be found in 1 chest in hell.
