how do you repair weapons in fallout new vegas?

The way I did it, was if I had the same weapon in my inventory, i can sort of merge them together to repair it.

dealers can help you for caps, if you have a high enough repair skill you can do it from a workbench, or if you are traveling with the Brotherhood of Steel girl, she can repair for you and she doesnt need a bench
