Depends how far into the game you are, and which start you chose. Most people see to start with Humble Merchant. If you did, sell your discoverer right away and go trading. Energy Cells and Ore are good early game trades. Buy another trading ship (something like a Mercury) and remote trade with that whilst continuing to trade with your own.

You can keep trading and make a nice steady income, or you can do like me on my first play through and buy a fighter (I nabbed a Buster fairly cheap) and equip it with shields and lasers to go do some combat missions. Alternatively, you can capture ships and claim them as your own to use/sell to make a nice steady stream of income until you can afford to start setting up universal traders or setting up factories.

X3 is a huge sandbox, and it's not particuarly easy to get to grips with. I would recommend checking Youtube for tutorials (there's a good one by cmdrDave) or the egosoft forums for tips. Keep at it, mate.
