It's just a title for people in online matches to look at. It also works as achievements.

They don't really do anything. They just show that you have unlocked certain "achievements" in the game that you can show off  before you start a match with an opponent and say "HEY, LOOK! I GOT THIS SUPER HARD ACHIEVEMENT! AND IM SHOWING YOU BECAUSE IM AWESOME!"
