Did she Die in battle?
If you own a house then Lydia should be inside your house.  The house you own is called breezesomething and it's near the front entrance of Whiterun beside the blacksmith.

inside the jarl's palace dragonsreach, as you go to leave the main exit she SHOULD have stopped you and started complaining about some stupid crap. Go back to dragons reach and talk to the (i think shes a black chick) girl by the main exit, with a sword and shield.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, watching harry potter goblet of fire didn't read your whole message sorry. On a side note there are alot of companions in the game, go to the inns and buy one. I got a 'master mage' for 500g (and he's REALLY strong)

If you are playing on PC, then you can instantly move to Lydia. Using the console commands (the tilda ~) you would type: player.moveto 000A2C94

When I found her, she somehow fell under or into a dwemer fortress, which I had not ever entered, just simply passed near.
