For sure, although it's highly recommended to play the first one as well.

Yes. Portal 1 was short, and had few story elements aside from setting and basic relationships.

Still, I recomend you play through Portal 1 first anyway. It won't take more than a few hours and you'll familiarize yourself with the series!

It should be easy to understand Portal 2, but to understand more about the mechanics and tricks of the game you can get Portal 1. It can be helpful, but not nessesary.

You probably will. They've kept tutorial levels in, so it's safe to assume that these levels will also catch old players up to speed, whilst simultaneously giving everything an explanation for the new people. If you don't want to buy and play the 3 hour Portal, you can go on the Half Life wiki, which will give you a run down of the first game's plot. Take care not to read into the Portal 2 section, though.

Yea. Portal 2 does a pretty good job of catching the player up on the story line from portal 1. But I highy recommend that you play them both for the best experience.

Absolutely. Portal 2 has a great storyline and great voice acting. It also doesn't really require any knowledge of Portal 1 (although it is helpful) and is meant to be a standalone title.

Yes you will. But if you play Portal 1 you can get the greater picture.

I would not recommend it. The storyline is literally a continuation from the first game, with a lot of humor derived from the first game.

You can definitely beat it without playing the first one, but why not just beat it? It takes 2-3 hours max.

You will understand Portal 2 as a game and will enjoy playing it, however there are many references to Portal throughout Portal 2 which will simply pass you by and are designed specifically to improve the experience of the gameplay for those who have played Portal previously.

You should play Portal 1 to get a decent understanding of it, but you don't need to.
