If you didn't build your house near your spawn point, you can use a map rendering tool such as Cartograph (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=13134) to render your map. The easiset way to find your house is to make a note of its X,Y,Z coordinates. You can do this by pressing F3 in the game. X and Z are the equivalent of Latitude and Longitude, while Y is your height from bedrock (also useful for finding the ideal mining layers). Your spawn point is supposed to change to the location that you last slept in (using a bed), so if you slept in your house it should be there. For me, though, the spawn point didn't change even after I slept in a bed. So failing that, you could just try to look at your surroundings or remember which direction it was in. You can make a high tower near to your house from cobblestone and put torches on the sides of the high tower and then you can locate your house by following the light from the torches. (guess you can see the torches only when night)

This is what I always do and it is recommended to put your valuable items in a chest before you start making the tower.

If you want a direct way to get to your house, google 'Zan's Minimap.' It's a mod that you can install on minecraft that shows a little minimap in your top-right and you can make waypoints that it points to, I.E. your house. It works on multiplayer too.
