It comes down to play style. Mage is extremely versatile, and allows you to stay out of the heat of the battle.

However, I would actually say that the overall best class to choose would be warrior, with sword and shield. While you will be in the heat of the battle, this will let you control the fight much better than you could otherwise.

Most of the bad fights I've had have gone sour because my party kept pulling hate, and getting themselves isolated from from the rest of group.

Playing sword and board warrior will also allow you to more strategically control when to stun and stagger enemies for cross class combos / skill interuptions. If you leave this to the NPC, they will blow through them without concern to anything.

I think a mage is the best class for Hawke, with lots of AOE spells you can be a powerful nuker and take out lots of enemies at once!

Either mage or Rogue for the most damage

Mage seems to be the better option in Dragon Age games, then Rogue.

it really varies based on what you want out of it

Warriors are probably best for short-range attacks
Rogues are great at attacking a single target if they're not getting messed about
and Mages are best controlling the whole battlefield really...

I like MAge because you don't really have to be inside the fight.

The beginning is very short and includes a good amount of combat, which lets you play each class and see which one feels right to you - it's all about personal preference, only you know which is best.

Personally, I enjoyed playing as a sword and shield warrior.  High survivability, good crowd control and decent damage - and the main thing, fun!

either of the 3 classes would be a fine choice due to the new gameplay interface. However if you want to get more out of the story, I would recommend being a mage.
